Maintaining a level of wellness as a caregiver is of the utmost importance. When you are giving a lot of your physical and mental energy towards looking after another person, you need to take the time to look after yourself to avoid burn out. Here are our 5 top tips to maintain peak physical and mental wellness to ensure you achieve a sense of balance in your life.
1. Eat at the same time each day
As a caregiver, you might find that your schedule is a little different each day. Sometimes you might need to be available to provide assistance during the night, or perhaps you’ll have some very early mornings.
Eating at the same time each day helps to regulate our circadian rhythm and will help us to stay more alert and energized throughout the day. Additionally, it will help our bodies ease into sleep when it’s time for bed.
2. Practice regular exercise
Regular exercise will improve both physical and mental wellness for everyone and has the bonus of being something that you can do by yourself to take some alone time.
You don’t need to go to the gym each day or complete an intense work out. Regular exercise can be as simple as taking the time to go for a walk outside, even just for a few minutes.
3. Eat a nutritionally balanced diet
The food that you consume has a direct impact on how you feel in body and in spirit. Aim to eat a balanced diet that includes 3 meals a day and some healthy snacks.
There will likely be days when time is short, and you need to eat something from the microwave for dinner. But it’s all about balance; make sure that the following day you eat something more nutritious and get your proper portion of fruit and vegetables.
4. Consume slow-release carbohydrates
Slow release carbohydrates will help you to feel fuller for longer and will provide you with energy throughout the day. Some examples of these complex carbohydrates are oats, wholegrain bread, brown rice, sweet potatoes and lentils and pulses. Plus, they’re all excellent sources of fiber, an important part of our daily diet.
It’s so important to make sure you don’t skip meals and incorporating some of these foods into your daily diet will help to keep you going through the day without having to reach for sugary snacks and sodas.
5. Stay hydrated
Hydration plays an important part of wellness, without adequate hydration our brains can become fuzzy, we can become more irritable, lethargic, and headaches may arise. The body is 75% water, so keeping your fluid levels up is essential.
Aim to drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of plain water a day, and more during the summer months. Remember, soda, coffee and tea doesn’t always count towards this fluid intake, so try to carry a water bottle around to keep hydrated.
